A Small Beginning

It had been a tough, uphill jog through the streets of Manjimup but Leo had finally reached his destination. Leo wasn't new to traveling long distances on foot but the apartment building he stood in front of required him to traverse several steep hills.

"Finally..." said an out of breath Leo. "I hope I'm not too late."

Leo quickly wiped the sweat from his forehead and long brown hair before approaching the building's main gate. For a split second Leo forgot which number to call on the console but quickly remembered it after thinking about who was on the other end, Cindy Tsukamoto. Leo's face blushed slightly, Cindy's face had been stuck in his head for the whole week. Leo was unsure what he liked more, Cindy's beautiful blue shoulder length hair or her lovely jade eyes.

Leo had met Cindy just over a week ago at the bookstore that he worked at. It was a brief encounter and Cindy was incredibly shy and was barely able to speak a word to Leo. However Cindy had continued to stop by his store everyday since then just to attempt to talk to him during his lunch breaks. Cindy would be able to blurt out a few sentences but she'd soon apologize and leave.

It was quite a surprise for Leo when Cindy invited him over to watch a movie. Sure Cindy didn't verbally ask Leo anything on her last visit to his store, but she did quickly write the invitation on a napkin and hand it to him.

"He-hello" squeaked the speaker above the console.

Leo hesitated for second, he always got nervous around girls ever since he hit puberty. Leo hadn't dated many girls during his high school years, in fact the only one he had was a memory he'd hope to forget someday. Since he graduated, Leo had been so focused on work he hadn't given himself time to pursue a relationship.

"Hi" he muttered. "It's Leo, is this Cindy?"

The speaker went quiet for a minute, giving Leo the idea he'd gone to the wrong place. Just as he went to ask again, the speaker came back on.

"Ple-please come in" it said as the gate slowly opened. "I'm in r-room 314." Leo had a hard time determining if that was Cindy due to the speaker's low quality but he made his way to room 314 anyway. When he arrived at the door, Leo quickly brushed his black shirt and jeans down before knocking three times. After hearing several locks unlocking, the door opened and revealed the shy, sweet girl Leo had met at his store.

"He-hello again L-leo" said Cindy as she tried to bring her eyes up to meet his but all they could do was look at different parts of the floor. "I'm g-glad you c-came."

"Hey Cindy" said Leo while doing a darn good job of hiding his nervousness. "Thank you for inviting me to your home."

Leo and Cindy continued to stand there in silence. Cindy tried to look up at Leo, but couldn't work up the courage. Lucky for Leo as his dumbfounded expression might have scared her.

Leo couldn't take his eyes off Cindy. Whenever she'd come into his work, Cindy had always kept herself almost completely covered in clothes, even on scorching hot days. But now all she was wearing was white pants, a sleeveless green shirt and purple slippers.

The awkward silence continued for two minutes until Leo turned to the sunset. "So, you must get a lot of romantic lighting here" he said before chuckling.

Cindy's face glowed a bright red. "I... I'm sorry, please come i-inside" she said after completely opening her door.

After taking his sneakers off, Leo sat on the large blue couch on the left side of the apartment. Cindy sat on the opposite end of the couch. Leo turned his head toward Cindy and could see she was trying to speak.

"This is a nice apartment" said Leo, hoping to start a conversation.

"Oh, th-thank you" said a blushing Cindy. "It's a b-bit small with only three rooms... but it is all I c-could afford."

"Well you did tell me you live here alone" said Leo. "For one person this place is great. My apartment feels a little empty ever since my roommate moved out."

For a split second, Leo and Cindy's eyes met and almost immediately they both looked back down to the center couch cushion.

Suddenly, Cindy shot up "E-excuse me for a moment" she said before walking into another room. Leo scratched his head in confusion before shrugging and looking around the room. It was pretty bare for being a kitchen and lounge room combined. The only things that seemed to stick out were the couch he was on and the large brown cupboard with a small television on top.

"I wonder what she's doing" Leo thought to himself, trying to keep his imagination in check.

Meanwhile, Cindy had her face deep in her pillows. "I-I have to do something" she thought to herself. "Leo came all the way here and I can't even look at his face..." It took several self bonks to the head for Cindy to muster up the courage to go back into the lounge room.

"S-so you said you live alone now?" asked Cindy as she returned to the couch.

"Yeah" replied Leo, excited that Cindy had come back. "I moved out of home the week after I finished high school. My buddy and I moved into an apartment together but he went to live with his new girlfriend a few months ago. It's a good thing my parent's own the apartment complex so I don't have to pay rent."

Cindy smiled. "That's l-lucky..." she mumbled. "It p-probably h-helps you s-save a l-lot of money..."

"Oh yeah" said Leo while nodding. "My paychecks look a lot bigger when there is no rent to pay. Speaking of that, where do you work Cindy? I imagine somewhere fancy if you can afford a place all to yourself."

"N-not really" answered Cindy while twiddling her thumbs. "I j-just teach a c-class of k-kids..."

"That's really cool" assured Leo. "It sounds like a lot of work."

"Y-yes it is..." assured Cindy as her face continued to glow red. "But I d-don't mind... I like b-being a-around kids..." Cindy let out a small sigh. "They a-aren't intimidating..."

"Well I hoped I'm not intimidating you" said Leo as he smiled.

"No no no, I didn't mean t-that" said a flustered Cindy as she tried to think of a way to change the conversation. "W-would you like something to drink?"

"I would love a drink, thank you" said Leo.

While Cindy poured Leo a glass of orange juice, she took a moment to look out her kitchen window into the twilight sky.

"Something show me a sigh that I won't ruin this" Cindy thoughts pleaded. Suddenly a shooting star flickered past. Cindy smiled and closed her eyes for a brief second before making her way back to Leo. After handing Leo his glass, Cindy sat down slightly closer than before.

"Di-did you still want to watch a movie?" she asked.

"I'd love too" replied Leo as he wolfed down his orange juice. "What kind of film did you have in mind?"

Cindy's face turned a bright red "We-well I have a small collection in my room" she said before getting up a third time. "Le-let me go pick out a bunch."

Leo smiled as Cindy went back into her room "She just can't sit still for long" he thought.

While Cindy looked through her four hundred and sixty two dvds, Leo wondered what kind of films Cindy was into. "I bet she's into a lot of romance and drama movies" he thought. "They suck... but I'll sit through them if it makes Cindy happy."

Suddenly, Leo's vision got a little blurry. He quickly shook his head a little but his sight would not return to normal.

"Maybe I need some fresh air" he thought while making his way to the front door. However after opening it, Leo felt his legs give out and he collapsed, his vision going completely dark.

Leo awoke to a mild headache and still slightly blurry sight but the latter cleared up quickly. Despite his vision returning, Leo didn't recognize his surroundings. Leo tried to look around but all that accomplished was spotting some colossal brown tower in the distance and a bizarre blue shaped mountain in the other direction.

"Where am I?" he asked not expecting an answer. "Last I remember I was at Cindy's apartment." Leo quickly checked his watch and saw that barely any time had past since he arrived at Cindy's home.

Leo took a moment to look around again. "This place is huge, how in the hell did I end up h-" Leo's thoughts were cut off by a loud rumble that shook the ground. Before he could even react, a second rumble knocked him off his feet.

"What the hell?!?" he shouted. "What could be causi-" Leo couldn't finish his sentence as another much louder and booming voice cut him off.

"Leo?"

The voice was so loud that Leo had to cover his ears.

"Leo? Where'd you go?"

Again Leo had to clutch his ears tight. Realizing the voice came from behind him, Leo slowly turned around and came face to face with two out of place objects. They were both the size of a pair of convertibles but were fluffy and purple.

That's when it hit Leo, hard. Those were slippers, gigantic slippers. Leo slowly lifted his head to see the slippers lead into white pants, then a sleeveless green shirt.

"Oh you've got to be kidding me" was all Leo could mutter when after the shirt came a beautiful face with blue shoulder length hair and two jade eyes full of tears.

Re-reading this, I can't help but chuckle at Cindy having 462 DVDs. I wish this detail came up again in the future. She probably has an entire room in their new home dedicated solely to her DVDs.

I understand you probably had the story idea/concept before streaming was mainstream but I still find this funny.
